There is a wonder in visiting places of worship. Buddhist temples are a significant part of Sri Lanka’s rich history. The history we grew up learning in a text book and didn’t see its’ significance, until we actually visited.

Mulkirigala Temple is built on a high natural rock, surrounded by four rocks known as Benagala, Kondagala, Bisogala and Seelawathiegala. Nicknamed as the ‘Little Sigiriya’ by the locals today, mistaken for Adam’s peak by the Dutch in the 18th century. If you don’t have time to visit the Cultural Triangle and Kandy while in Sri Lanka, this temple is a little sample of it. A large collection of paintings and sculptures, quaint architecture and the abundant beauty of nature around the temple.

Please dress modestly when visiting places of worship. Both male and female clothing should be below the knee, shoulders and chest covered. Please take off your hats indoors. There are certain area’s that won’t allow foot wear, remove just before entering those spaces.

The tickets are around USD 1 per person, wear a hat, water bottle in hand and good footwear for climbing steps. What feels like 10,000 steps up hill (I think it’s more like 500), is an easy climb, rest if you have to under a tree. The rock is surrounded by trees so you’re not greeted with magnificent views on the way up-  that’s motivation to get to the very top!
