The train journey from Colombo to Kandy is a remarkable experience, offering an affordable and picturesque escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Booking tickets is convenient; you can either use a local Mobitel connection by dialling 365 or visit the ticket booths at Colombo Fort Station, Peradeniya, or Kandy Station.
Choosing the Right Seats when you book
Personally I prefer a non-air-conditioned experience (you have to peak through dirty windows to see the view outside), the B carriage offers a delightful option. Seats 1, 2, 3, and 4 are front-facing, while seats 39, 40, 41, and 42 offer a reverse-facing view. These seats are ideally located away from the toilets and near the carriage gaps, perfect for capturing stunning videos of the journey.
The Journey Itself
We embarked on the 7:00am train from Colombo Fort to Kandy Station (got there for 6:30am, printed the mobile ticket reference at the tiny counter and sat in our seats by 6:45am). The first stop was Peradeniya Station, conveniently located closer to Sati Villa. Our journey concluded at Kandy, the final stop. It’s vital to plan your onward travel from Kandy in advance—consider arranging a car or van depending on your group size. Sati can assist with a trusted network for transportation. Despite being a major station, public transport options from Kandy onward are limited, and waits can be lengthy.
The Experience
The train is somewhat loud, with a few bumpy sections, but the breathtaking views more than compensate for any noise or distractions. The scenery is mesmerising, and the children were captivated throughout the trip, never once mentioning the word “bored”.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, this train journey is a must-try experience that immerses you in the beauty of Sri Lanka’s landscape while providing a unique travel adventure.
