A few minutes away from Sati Villa Rekawa Beach, is the Turtle Watch Organisation. They have an information centre that you should visit during the day. The most significant activity of the organisation involves previous egg poachers, now working as turtle nest protectors who monitor the beach to ensure all nests are safe. They provide guided tours to watch turtles nesting. Speak to our property supervisor if you wish to view turtles nesting (usually after 8pm). You don’t have to get to the Turtle Watch prior to participating in a guided nesting tour. Sati Villa staff will personally walk you along the beach after inquiring the exact location of the nesting. Usually a 1-5 minute walk from the Villa. Please pay the due fees directly to the Turtle Conservation Project, even if you are viewing the turtle nesting on the beach near the Villa. They will provide you a red light for viewing and an opportunity to take a photo/video (without flash).
The eggs usually remain where they were laid, with nest protectors providing protection across the entire beach. This maximises the yield of the nests and ensures as many hatchlings as possible survive into the sea. It’s not timed and the surprise element is just fascinating. This is why we always tell our guests to walk along the beach during sunrise and sunset. Everything about the Rekawa beach is magical but seeing little turtles making their way to the ocean is extra special.
Before you visit, read about the conservation project and learn about the types of turtles that visit the shores outside the Villa at www.turtlewatchrekawa.org. We can’t really tell you a season for turtle nesting, it seems all year round, with the odd quiet night with zero sightings, another with 3 -4 sightings. As a guest of the villa, please ensure you strictly follow these rules-
- Never obstruct the path of the nesting turtle or baby turtles.
- No white light/flash should be directed at the nesting turtles. The Turtle Watch guide will allow you a photo opportunity under the red light. Be quiet and keep a distance.
- Please pay the minimum fee or a higher donation to the Turtle Watch guide.
- Do not litter on the beach.
- The lights of your room must be at a minimum during the dark hours and balcony lights switched off completely, no loud noise or light in the garden area closer to the beach.
Enjoy the magic of nature!
