There are a few must visit beaches along the southern coast, but our kids favourite is Hiriketiya Beach. When you start to miss the crowds or want to feel the beach (people) buzz, the beautiful drive towards Hiriketiya is highly recommended.
Apart from the little dips and occasional waves that knock you out, it’s still safe because it’s a bay, just watch out for the L plate surfers- can’t beat them, join them! Along the bay are instructors and board rentals. Just be extra careful during the ‘off season’- the sea is rough, so you have to follow the warnings of the local surf instructors. Don’t go in too much, the waves are still surf worthy closer to the beach.
The area is dotted with quaint shops and cafes. We carry our own towels from Sati Villa, snacks and water, only buy a couple of cans from a cafe, just to book a table to keep our stuff (there are no sun beds along the beach anymore as a coast preservation scheme). You can lie on the soft sand with the towel, however, there is a good change the waves will carry your belongings into the sea – the waves are not predictable. Hence why we come early and book a table or if too busy, we leave our belonging in the vehicle.
Ideal time to be at the beach is mid morning till lunch or soon after lunch, leave by 6pm if you want to get away from the party goers. Or join them to the late hours of the night and party on!
Enjoy the beach hair for the next couple of days, Hiriketiya is totally worth it!
