There are a few must visit beaches along the southern coast, but our kids favourite is Hiriketiya Beach. When you start to miss the crowds or want to feel the beach (people) buzz, the beautiful drive towards Hiriketiya is highly recommended.
Apart from the little dips and occasional waves that knock you out, it’s still safe because it’s a bay, just watch out for the L plate surfers- can’t beat them, join them! Along the bay are instructors and board rentals.
The area is dotted with quaint shops and cafes. We carry our own towels from the villa, snacks and water, only buy a couple of cans from a cafe, just to book a sun bed and table to keep our stuff. And return to the villa in time for dinner.
Ideal time to be at the beach is soon after lunch, leave by 6pm if you want to get away from the party goers. Or join them to the late hours of the night and party on!
